Paphiopedilum QF Alani (Greyi x Topaz Charm) has been originated and registered by Quintal Farms in 2025.
Paphiopedilum Greyi (godefroyae x niveum) has been originated and registered by Corning in 1888. Its very old primary hybrid.
Paphiopedilum Topaz Charm (Emerald Magic x In-Charm Topaz) has been originated by In-Charm O.N. and registered by J. Fang in 2016.
This new interesting Paphiopedilum hybrid has many Paph. species in the background but four major species are Paph. godefroyae, Paph. niveum, Paph. insigne and Paph. helenae. Using Paph. niveum and Paph. helenae at the breeding could be a new direction to create miniature novelty hybrids.

Description:
Our candidate has one flower on one 12.5-cm unstacked inflorescence plus seedpod on second inflorescence.
Flower Measurements:
NS H - 8.4 cm; NS V - 7.1 cm;
Dorsal Sep. W - 5.3 cm; Dorsal Sep. L - 3.8 cm;
Petal W - 3.2 cm; Petals L - 5.0 cm;
Lat/Synsepal W - 3.4 cm; Lat/Synsepal L - 2.9 cm;
Lip/Pouch W - 2.2 cm; Lip/Pouch L - 4.0 cm.
This is a great pairing and produces something better than what I would hope for. The flower is balanced with excellent color and markings. Overall, I find it flat and well formed. All segments of the flower work in balance to form a lovely overall composition. The dorsal is excellent in shape and form and it complements the petals and pouch nicely. For this cross, the petals seem wide and not excessively long; thus, a nice presentation. The color is wonderful — a cream white with wonderful, regular and consistent spots of good depth and intensity. Being unstaked is the candidate's final nod for an award. I really hope to see this plant on the judging table so I can award it a mid-AM.
The candidate flower is charming, has balance, but lacks the roundness of one of its awarded parent, Paphiopedilum Greyi. The stem is well above the foliage for visual symmetry.
Dorsal sepal is large but reflexed.
Petals are wide and do not show negative space, or fenestration; however, the length does not balance the dorsal sepal to provide the appearance of roundness.
Pouch is narrow; due to upward tapering, it gives the appearance of a gourd; therefore, affects the aesthetics of the flower. It is also slightly high.
Synsepal does not blend nicely to frame the pouch.
Color is clear and the callouses are harmoniously defined.
Comparing with the awarded parent, Paphiopedilum Greyi, the candidate's measurements are within the ranges for the segments and the natural spread; however, the relative narrowness of the petals and the pouch indicate that it is not an improvement over this parent.
Thank you,
Vijay
I find this a charming hybrid. Looking at the previously awarded parent, Paph. Greyi ‘Memoria Walter Off’, and looking at the species, I’d have to say this is an improvement in hybridization. It’s interesting to look at other photos of QF Alani; it seems to be a roll of the dice in terms of results, but I find this QF Alani quite nice. It also appears well-grown, with two inflorescences.
Form-wise, this is symmetrical, with the exception of the dorsal slightly off-center with a slight fold on the upper right, but not enough to dismiss it. The petals and sepals are well-shaped. It is larger than the previously awarded Paph. Greyi with slightly narrower petals proportionally, I suspect coming in from the insigne and helenae.
I would score this well in the color category. I like the background, which appears to be cream or very pale yellow, with maroon stippling and light green veining on the back. The stippling is very consistent, and I like how it is more coalesced on the superior surface of the petals, the result of the combination of Paph. niveum and Paph. godefroyae. The pouch is also very interesting, and I can see Paph. helenae coming in with veining, a slight pink pouch, and slight pink on the staminode.
I would score this with an AM of 82 or 83 range.
Thank you for presenting this very nice cross Paph. QF Alani.
The flower has good form and color. The form could be improved with fuller lateral sepals, so even though I would nominate it for judging, I would take some points there.
The flower has some nice features of its parents as would be expected. At judging I would expect a high HCC or Low AM. Would like to see more of this cross as it has wonderful potential.
Best Regards
Paul Wetter
While not as good as some of the better Greyi's, form, color and size are reasonable and this plant's vigor should result in a future culture award and possibly mid level HCC. Award of Distinction, not so much.
The flower is quite lovely. It is difficult to compare it directly with its parent, Paph. Topaz Charm, as no published photographs of that hybrid appear to be available online. However, the sepal shape suggests influence from Paph. godefroyae and Paph. niveum. The petal and lip form and coloration, on the other hand, may reflect traits inherited from Paph. insigne and Paph. helenae. The flower form is good even with the petals slightly porrect, and the flower size is larger than Paph. Greyi. I would consider this to be a high HCC.
Best regards, Jojo.
Beautiful presentation, nice size compared to plant size. Slightly cupped. I love the soft butter color with the slightly darker pouch and the clear, distinct contrasting markings. Staminode brings both harmony with spotting and contrast with the bright green center. I would award it around a 77-78 HCC.
Description:
One flower on a 12.5 cm unstacked inflorescence; the flower measurements are as follows:
N S H - 8.4 cm N S V - 7.1 cm
Dorsal Sepal W - 5.3 cm L - 3.8 cm
Petal W - 3.2 cm L - 5.0 cm
Lat/synsepal W - 3.4 cm L - 2.9 cm
Lip/Pouch W - 2.2 cm L - 4.0 cm
Dorsal sepal is orbicular, cuspidate, cupped with a porrect tip; the margins are smooth; background color is ivory, matte overlaid with dark magenta spots arranged in stripes. 1/4 of the dorsal sepal distally is devoid of any spotting. The petals are oval, slightly cupped; margins are undulate, hirsute; color is ivory in background with dark magenta spots arranged in stripes; the distal 1/4 is devoid of any spotting; the pouch is of an uniform ivory color with faint yellow overlay, very light brown stripes proximally; the column is light magenta centrally; a green/yellow spot is seen below the column.
Flower Assessment:
This is a well grown plant with a very beautiful flower. The tall inflorescence shows off this flower well. The plush ivory background with the dark magenta spots is striking; the prominent dorsal sepal is the attractive centerpiece! It adds to the overall regal appearance; together the petals and the pouch present an appealing picture. The slight cuppiness does not in any way distract from the overall attractiveness. Although this candidate plant has not been awarded, I would consider scoring it at a low AM.
I think this is a very nice example of Paph. QF Alani. The petals are held out with a slight downward turn. The color is very pleasing with the red spots on the white background. The spots are well-defined. The dorsal is wide and has a slight notch at the apex. The synsepal is just large enough to eliminate any fenestration between the petals and pouch. The pouch looks to be the right size for the flower. The flower is cupped, but the dorsal sepal and petals are flat. When viewed straight on the cupping is barely noticeable. The flower has bilateral symmetry. I compared the size of QF Alani to a couple awards of Paph. Greyi and found QF Alani to be almost equal in size or larger to the AM and HCC awards to Greyi. The last awards were in 2008 and 2005. I would definitely want to score this flower. I would probably score it a high HCC or low AM.
Thank you,
Judie
